Fraternity History

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization to be founded on the campus of a historically black college. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The founders were three Howard University undergraduates, — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, and Frank Coleman. Joining them was their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just.

From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “FRIENDSHIP IS ESSENTIAL TO THE SOUL”, the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. That phrase was selected as the motto.

Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift were adopted as Cardinal Principles.

2nd District History

The Epsilon Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. resides in the Second District of the Fraternity.

The “Mighty” Second District of the illustrious Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc is currently comprised of five eastern states New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. It has long been a bastion of the fraternities cardinal principles of “Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift” and motto “Friendship is essential to the Soul”.

​It has had long, glowing and prosperous history. It is the birthplace of seven single letter chapters, Beta, Epsilon, Iota (Fraternity’s First Graduate Chapter (Aug. 17, 1920 Atlantic City) later re-chartered in Chicago), Mu, Nu, Omicron and Pi and is the current home of Kappa chapter (Syracuse Univ. Feb. 18, 1922). Kappa chapter was originally charted at West Virginia State College in 1920.

EPSILON PI Chapter History

Epsilon Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated was chartered March 23, 1973 originally in Media, Pa. The Chapter was organized by Brothers: Jesse Williams, Jr., William C. Shumake, J. Paul Stephens, Meredith Chaplin, Jr. (Omega Chapter), Juan R. Baughn, Johnnie Ponzie (Omega Chapter), John R. Lay, Lawrence Charleston, Jr., and Brad Lewis (Omega Chapter).

In Fall 1973, Epsilon Pi assisted with the process to charter the Alpha Eta Chapter which occurred on September 17, 1974. Because of unknown circumstances Epsilon Pi became dormant after several meetings. The Chapter remained dormant until the spring of 1981.
